Canoe 2 Finished!

Canoe 2. Oil on Linen. 30" x 22".

After weeks of glazing, Canoe 2 is now complete. As you may be able to tell in a glance looking at this jpeg, the final photo isn't complete. Something this large and this glazed is really, really hard to photograph. I'll try again tomorrow morning.

This is of a canoe on Lake Padden at dusk in the late winter. When the painting began the trees are bare. I was just at Lake Padden. It was 70 degrees and everything was leafed out. I miss the winter light already.

As I wrote about here, here and here, Canoe 2 was inspired by a number of canoe paintings by Peter Doig and by my evening walks at Lake Padden.

Beautiful - amazing. The glazing technique really adds depth to the painting. Love it.

Thanks! I'm loving the indirect painting technique with the many, many layers of glazing. Each painting takes longer, but the depth of them fascinates me.

Thanks James and Loriann - this one was really, really fun to paint. I probably say that about most paintings but the undersurface of this (handprimed and polished oil ground on linen) was unbelievable to work with. As much as I disliked doing the priming, I really liked what it did for the painting.

My favorite art inventory system

Over the past couple of years I've looked at and played with a lot of computer programs for keeping track of artwork. Here are past blog posts on the subject: Art Inventory Systems, here's what I've tried and then this Update on Art Inventory Systems Alyson Stanfield has also written about this riveting subject on her great blog here . I come to these systems with built-in bias. I prefer a FileMaker based system to an Access based system because I think it's a more powerful and smoother software to use. I'd worked for a nonprofit that used Filemaker and it's what I know. I also prefer a system without goofy graphics. I'm an artist. I care how things look. If I open up software every couple of days I would like it to be clean and simple and not ugly. But computers evolve and the next direction is to the cloud.
